Not your Incubator - When the State Sees a Womb, Not a Woman

Not your Incubator - When the State Sees a Womb, Not a Woman

Adriana Smith was brain dead. Her heart no longer beat on its own. Her brain showed no activity. By every medical standard, she had passed.

But the state of Georgia refused to let her go with dignity.

Because Adriana was pregnant, doctors told her devastated family they were legally required to keep her body alive indefinitely until the fetus could be removed (this child was not delivered). Her family, already reeling from unthinkable loss, was told her body no longer belonged to them. Or to her. It belonged to the state.

This is not dystopian fiction. This is America in 2025.

And this is what happens when abortion bans strip us of our humanity.

Adriana Wasn’t an Incubator. She Was a Woman. A Sister. A Daughter. A Mother. A Person.

Georgia's abortion ban, like those across many Southern states, makes no exception for tragedy, for consent, for dignity. It is a law rooted not in compassion or care, but in control. Adriana’s case reveals a horrifying truth: that under these laws, the presence of a uterus is enough to override autonomy, even in death.

This is a violation of basic human rights.

It’s a violation that disproportionately impacts women of color, who already face barriers to quality healthcare, and are more likely to be ignored, silenced, or sacrificed by medical systems and legislation alike.

Adriana was Black. And she deserved better.

We Are Not Incubators. And We Refuse to Be Treated as Such.

At Unapologetically Sovereign, we stand in rage, in grief, and in resistance.

Our “Having a Uterus Does Not Make Me an Incubator” tee is more than a shirt. It’s a scream. A statement. A demand for change.

And in honor of Adriana Smith, a portion of proceeds from this shirt will go directly to her family’s GoFundMe to support them in their grief, in their fight, and in reclaiming some measure of dignity after the state took so much.

Let This Be a Line We Do Not Cross Again.

Adriana’s story should shake the nation. But more importantly, it should move us to act. Demand better laws. Donate. Vote. Speak the truth even when it’s uncomfortable.

Because this isn’t just about one woman.

It’s about all of us.

We deserve bodily autonomy. We deserve dignity.
And we deserve to be seen as more than vessels.
